Simulation of rock falls based on the Lumped Mass and CRSP models.
Computational hypothesis for Lumped Mass is: Two dimensional diagram in which the slope profile consists of a number of straight line segments; the block is reduced to a point and that air resistance is immaterial.
CRSP (Colorado Rockfall Simulation Program) model was devised by Pfeiffer and Bowen (1989) proposes the modeling of fall of blocks having, in the vertical plane of fall, spherical, cylindrical or disc form. CRSP describes the behavior of the blocks by applying the equations of parabolic trajectory of bodies in free fall and the principle of conservation of total energy. As opposed to Lumped Mass, the roughness of the slope and the dimension of blocks are used as further parameters to model the impact event. Specifically, CRSP assumes that the angle formed between the direction of the block and the slope profile, be varied in accordance with a statistic to be defined for each case investigated. Thus the model treats even combinations of movement in free fall, bounce, roll, and slide that can vary in relation to the size of the blocks and the roughness of the slope. The reliability of this method has been verified by comparison of the numerical results against field trials.
The software interfaces with the program TRISPACE for the automatic generation of sections from plan annotated with elevations or from rasterized images.
The trajectories of fall can be divided in the following areas:
- transit area and stop area of 70% of the blocks;
- stop area of 95% of the blocks;
- stop area of 100% of the blocks.
To these areas are then assigned the relative hazard classes.
